The Truth about The Power of Microneedling: Benefits, Results and Aftercare

At Cambridge Skin and Wellness, we are committed to providing the highest quality skincare and aesthetic services to our clients in Cambridge, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo and surrounding regions. One of our most popular treatments is microneedling (Collagen induction therapy), a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that has made waves in the skincare industry.

In this post, we delve into the truth about microneedling - its benefits, results, and how to take care of your skin afterward.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin rejuvenating procedure that utilizes tiny, sterile needles to create punctures in your skin. These tiny holes or micro-injuries promote the body's natural collagen production, initiating a healing process that smoothens and tightens your skin. This is a treatment for all skin types and essentially helps to fight signs of aging by telling your body to make new collagen!

Benefits of Microneedling

1. Enhanced Collagen Production

As we age, the collagen production in our skin naturally slows down, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Microneedling stimulates your body to produce new collagen, helping to restore the youthful look of your skin.

2. Reduced Wrinkles and Fine Lines

By boosting collagen and elastin production, microneedling effectively reduces wrinkles and fine lines, giving you noticeably smoother skin.

3. Improved Skin Texture, Uneven Skin Tone and Pigmentation Concerns

If you struggle with skin conditions like acne scars, or rosacea or have an uneven skin texture, microneedling can help. The treatment promotes new skin cell growth, leading to healthier, smoother, and more even skin.

4. Increased Product Absorption

Microneedling makes your skin more receptive to skincare products. The tiny punctures create channels that allow your skincare products to penetrate deeper, enhancing their effectiveness.

What To Expect During Microneedling Treatment?

The treatment begins with a skilled provider from Cambridge Skin and Wellness applying a topical numbing cream to your face. This numbing cream helps ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible. With a microneedling device, they then make tiny punctures across your skin. You may feel a slight prickling sensation, but the treatment should not be painful.

Results

You will notice immediate improvements in the texture and quality of your skin following a microneedling treatment. However, the most significant results begin to appear several weeks after the procedure as the body produces new collagen and skin cells. For optimal results, we recommend a series of treatments, typically 3-6, spaced about a month apart.

Pre-Treatment:

1. Avoid Accutane in the six months prior to beginning your treatment sessions.

2. Do not use topical agents that may increase the sensitivity of your skin such as retinoids, exfoliants, topical antibiotics or acids 5-7 days prior to your treatment.

3. STOP hydroquinone, retinol, and exfoliating acids at least 3 days prior to treatment.

4. If you suffer from cold sores/fever blister – take Valtrex 3 days prior to treatment to prevent an outbreak. Please reach out to your provider if you need this prescribed for you.

5. Do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil for at least 3 days prior to your microneedling session (unless this is regularly prescribed for a specific medical condition, please review with your NP/MD). These will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical for your skin rejuvenation.

6. Avoid IPL/Laser procedures/ radiofrequency microneedling, unprotected sun exposure, or sunburn for at least 4 weeks prior to your procedure.

7. No waxing, depilatory creams, or electrolysis to the area being treated for 5-7 days prior.

8. Do not shave the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation. If there’s dense hair present in the treatment area, shave the day before you arrive for your appointment.

9. If you’re prone to cold sores, take an antiviral agent for 2 days prior to and the day of the treatment.

10. Avoid blood thinning agents for one week prior because bruising is a common side effect of microneedling.

Post-Treatment:

1. Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications for one week after the procedure (unless this is regularly prescribed for a specific medical condition, please review with your NP/MD).

2. For 2 days after your treatment avoid direct ultra-violet exposure (sun and solariums/sun beds), intensive cardio, exercise or gymnasium regimens and excessively hot showers, bathing, spas or sauna

3. Do not use ice on your face, and avoid using arnica/bromelain. These may interfere with the natural inflammatory process that’s critical for your skin rejuvenation.

4. Avoid sun tanning and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks.

5. After 24 hours, always use sunblock (30 SPF or higher) and wear a hat if you’re outside.

6. Use a painkiller, such as Tylenol, if you experience any soreness (unless you have a contraindication, please discuss it with your provider).

7. Avoid getting a tattoo in the area of treatment for 14 days.

8. For 1 week avoid mechanical scrubs (exfoliants), AHAs such as glycolic, lactic or malic acids, BHAs including salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, bleaching agents, retinoids, hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid, and alcohol.
